SUZHOU

Com us explicava anteriorment al vídeo de Hangzhou, Suzhou és l'altra ciutat per on possiblement Marco Polo va passar i se'n va enamorar. Suzhou és famosa pels seus jardins, parcs, ponts i canals. La veritat és qua val molt la pena fer-hi una visita, tot i que ara encara no està del tot florit. A part dels jardins, Suzhou també és famosa per la seva seda, i com veureu al vídeo per la seva especialitat de peix, boníssim! :)

SUZHOU

As I was telling you before during the Hangzhou video, Suzhou is that other city Marco Polo apparently visited and fell in love with. Suzhou is famous for its gardens, parks, bridges and canals. The truth is it is really worth it to pay a visit, even if at this time of the year not everything has blossomed yet. Apart from the gardens, the city is also famous for its silk, and as you'll see in the video, for its fish speciality, really tasty! :)

SUZHOU

MESTRE DE TAI JI

Ho sé, estic escandalosament atractiu... ;) Ja ho veieu, que a Xina es practica el Tai ji, en jordi practica Tai ji. La veritat és que és més difícil del que sembla, però és increiblement relaxant. No, a la classe no sóm dos i la professora, però és que erem els únics que anàvem vestits com cal!

Actualment, el Tai Ji és una manera de fer exercici i mantenir el cos en forma a base de moviments molt exactes i molt lògics per mantenir el cos en equilibri. Cal, per tant, ser molt conscient del teu cos i com l'utilitzes. Ambtot, no deixa de ser un altre tipus d'art marcial, i cada moviment està relacionat amb la defensa o l'atac a l'adversari, i és la manera que té la professora d'explicar-nos el perquè un moviment és correcte o no. Total, que sóc una màquina de matar en potència! ;)

TAI JI MASTER

I know, I'm incredibly atractive... ;) There you go, chinese practice Tai Ji, Jordi practices Tai Ji. The truth is, it is way more difficult than it looks like, but incredibly relaxing. And no, we're not only two in class, but we were the only ones properly dressed that day....

Nowadays, Tai Ji is a good way to exercise and keep your body in shape using very exact and logic movements that keep the body in balance. Therefore it is necessary to be very aware of how we use the body. Nevertheless, it still is a kind of martial art, and each movement is related to defense yourself or atack the oponent. And that's the way our teacher has to tell us when a movement is correct or incorrect. In other words, she's turning me into a potential killing machine! ;)

FEINES EXTREMES!

Un cop a dalt de la torre de comunicacions de Shanghai (la torre de les boles perquè ens entenguem), resulta que la sorpresa més gran no va ser la vista, que també..., sinó que de sobte, de més amunt es va despenjar la brigada de neteja de la torre. Jutgeu vosaltres mateixos... Qui s'atreveix amb aquesta feina? M'hagués encantat preguntar-los un parell de coses:

- Els agrada la feina?

- La van buscar? o com la van trobar?

- Està ben pagada?

- O senzillament... Perquè?

Sigui com sigui, vaig decidir:

1. M'agraden les altures, però no crec que m'atrevís a fer una feina així...

2. Els tinc gran respecte.

EXTREME JOBS

Once at the top of the communications tower (the balls tower so we're all clear), my biggest surprise wasn't the view... All of the sudden the cleaning team came down from the upper part to clean the glass. Judge it yourselves... Who'd dare to do it? I was really impressed. I would have loved to ask them a couple things:

- Do they like the job?

- Did they look for it? Or how did they find it?

- Do they pay good money?

- Or simply... Why?

In anycase I decided:

1. I like hights, but i don't think I could do that...

2. A lot of respect for what they do.

MERCI ALFONS

Ha passat un mes... I tot i que penso molt amb tothom, la veritat és que no he tingut gaire temps d'anyorar-me ;) Ja sabeu com sóc. Tot i això, veure una cara coneguda i amb qui parlar en català sempre és agradable i ve de gust. De fet l'Alfons va ser l'excusa per anar d'excursió a Shanghai ja que sovint corre per Xina i aquell dia era a la ciutat. I aprofito per donar-li les gràcies per preocupar-se de la meva estada a Xina, interessar-se pels meus plans, trucar-me, fer de missatger ;), i anar a sopar amb mi per Shanghai. Va estar molt bé! Merci i fins aviat.

THANKS ALFONS

A month has passed by... and although I think a lot about everyone, I still haven't had the time to really miss anything ;) You know me... However, meet someone you know and speak catalan for a while is always nice. In fact, Alfons was the excuse to visit Shanghai, since he is often traveling around China and that day he was in the city. And I take the chance to thank him for caring about my stay in China, my future plans, calling me, act as a messenger ;), and having dinner with me. It was really nice! Thanks and see you soon.

CONTRASTOS

Una imatge val més que mil paraules... Com comentava abans, els contrastos són presents a totes les ciutats Xines que fins ara he visitat, i Shanghai no podia ser menys. Si us hi fixeu bé, veureu que la bastida davant de la casa és feta de canyes de bambú. I tot i que són extremadament resistents, contrasten amb la figura del "World Financial Centre" al darrera. Actualment l'edifici més alt de la ciutat i que s'acosta als 500 metres d'alçada.

I són aquest tipus de detalls el que fa que perdre's pels carrers de la ciutat sense ni tan sols seguir una ruta concreta sigui ja tota una experiència.

CONTRAST

An image is woth a 1000 words... As I explained before, contrasts are very present in all chinese cities I've visited so far, and Shanghai is no exception. If you look closer, you'll see that the scaffolding in front of the house is made of bambu. And eventhough it is extremely resistant, it contrasts with the silhouette of the World Financial Centre right behind. Nowadays the highest building of the city, with almost 500m.

And these sort of details make a great experienec of just walking along the city streets.

SHANGHAI
De Xina és segurament la ciutat més occidentalitzada, molt europea, i tot i així la primera vegada et talla la respiració. Dos dies no són suficients per gaudir plenament de tot el que la ciutat et pot oferir, per tant caldrà fer-hi una segona visita properament. De totes maneres, amb dos dies en tens prou per adonar-te de les possibilitats d'una ciutat de 20 milions d'habitants que continua creixent. Cert és que viure-hi podria ser una mica asfixiant a vegades, però la ciutat té un encant que enganxa a qualsevol. La barreja de barris futuristes amb gratacels infinits que contrasten amb barris tradicionals, temples, i paradetes de menjar als carrers, fan que Shanghai sigui un lloc realment especial.

Així doncs, caldrà tornar-hi per continuar-la descobrint!

SHANGHAI

It si probably the most occidental city of all China, very european, but still, the first time it cuts your breath. two days are not enough to enjoy all the city has to offer, therefore a second visit will be necessary, and soon. Nevertheless, in a couple days you realize about the possibilities a 20-milion-people city has. A city that is still growing... The truth is, that living there could some times be a bit stressful, but the city's charm is addictive. The mixture of futuritic neighbourhoods with incredible skyscrapers with traditional areas, temples, and food stands makes Shanghai a very speacial place.

So, as I said, I'll have to go back to keep discovering it!

DÉU VA CREAR EL CEL I HANGZHOU A LA TERRA

Algunes guies ho diuen de hangzhou, d'altres de Suzhou, i els xinesos d'ambdos llocs... El que si és cert és que si ara té encant, quan "aparentment" Marco Polo i va arribar era espectacular! És una ciutat en ple creixement, amb uns ambients molt agradables i, parlant clar, amb molta pela! El llac al centre de la ciutat és de postal, així com els temples dels turons, i el més interessant des del meu punt de vista, perdre's pels carrerons de la ciutat. I sí això es pot fer amb bona companyia, el viatge és inmillorable. A les fotos hi veureu principalment la Cintia (brasilenya), en Moritz (alemany) i un servidor.

I per si amb Hangzhou no en teníem prou, vam fer una escapadeta a Shaoxing, on van néixer els pares de la Cintia. Els amics de la família ens van acollir com si en fóssim tots part, i vam passar un dia fantàstic. Més amunt en teniu una petita mostra.

GOD CREATED THE HEAVENS AND HANGZHOU ON EARTH

Some guides say it about Hangzhou, some others about Suzhou, and chinese about both... What it's for sure is that if it is charming now, when "suposely" Marco Polo arrived there it was spectacular! it's a growing city, with really nice environtments and, being clear, with a lot of money. The lake at the city center is a postcard, and so are the hill temples. And the most interesting thing from my point of view is to get lost along the city's streets. And if you can do that in good company, the trip couldn't be better. In the pictures you'll see mainly Cintia (Brasil), Moritz (germany) and myslef.

And if Hangzhou wasn't enough, we visited Shaoxing were Cintia's parents were born. their friends welcomed us as part of the family, and we had a great day. Above you have a bit of it!

RECORDANT VELLS TEMPS

Una bona manera de passar una tarda de diumenge després de recórrer les Gran Muralla de la ciutat, és un passeig pell llac sobre bambú! El cert és que és una mica cansat, i com tot en un país amb més de 1300 milions de persones, i com veieu a la foto, és difícil de trobar quelcom que només vulguis fer tu... És a dir, allò més complicat, esquivar els altres bambús!

AS IN ANCIENT TIMES

A good way to spend Sunday afternoon after walking up and down the great wall of the city, is to take one of the bambú boats and exercise a bit. It is quite tiring I have to say, and on top of that, in a country with more than 1300 milion people, it is hard to do something not many people feel like doing at the same time... So to say, the most complicated part is to avoid the other boats!

UNA MICA D'HISTÒRIA

Tot i que tots coneixem la gran muralla Xina a Beijing, el cert és que Nanjing, com a ex-capital de la Xina durant diverses dinasties, gaudeix encara avui d'uns 33 Km de la muralla que temps enrere la protegia. Val la pena visitar-la.

HISTORY BITES

Although we all know China by its famous wall in Beijing, the truth is that Najing, as the ex-capital of the republic during several dinasties still has around 33 km of the impressive wall that once protected it. It's worth a visit.

ANTI CRISIS

No sé si el xinesos aguantaran la crisis millor que la resta del món o no, però el que no es pot negar és aquí a ningú li cauen els anells i, és més, tot i que el consumisme està a l'ordre del dia com a casa nostra, es mantenen oficis de carrer com ara el d'arreglar sabates. I em direu, aquí també en tenim. Sí, però no un a cada cantonada i tots fent feina... Qui sap, potser amb la crisis això torna...

ANTI CRISIS

I do not know if chinese will resist the crisis better than the rest of the world, but what is undenyable is that they're ready to do anything and, eventhough consumerism is present here as it is in our countries, jobs such us fixing shoes on the street, still survive here. And you'll say, I also know some here... Yeah, sure, but not in every corner and all of them working. Who knows, maybe with the crisis all this comes back...

LA PEGA...

Tot i amb experiència prèvia i preparat per acceptar i aprendre de diferències, cultures i costums, a certes coses no m'hi podré acostumar mai... I sí, en aquest cas és una cosa molt criticable als xinesos, però a certs nivells, això passa a totes les grans ciutats del món, sense anar més lluny barcelona. És un greu problema, prenem-ne consciència. Aquí teniu una dia amb contaminació i un dia sense (visible). No és boira tot i que recordi Vic...

THE WORST PART...

Even with previous experience and prepared to accept and learn from differences and cultures, I'll never get used to certain things... And yes, this is something we could criticise the chinese for, but at different levels, this is happening in all big cities around the world, including Barcelona. It iss a big problem we should all be aware of. Here you have a smoggy day and a "clean" one.

PURA ATRACCIÓ!

Turística de moment... Els xinesos de les fotos no són noves amistats, tot i que intenció n'hi posen... senzillament és gent que creu que la meva cara (atractivíssima) occidental és més interessant que la muralla mil·lenària de la Nanjing, per exemple. ;)

La població local està habituada als occidentals, essent una ciutat amb molta indústria i una universitat gran, però tot i així, a cada visita turística, algú o altre et para per fer-se fotos amb tu. És ben curiós...

PURE ATRACTION!

Turistic atraction till now... These chinese in the pictures are my new friends, although they do try... They're simply people who find my occidental (super atractive) face much more interesting than the ancient wall of Nanjing, for example. ;)

Locals are used to westerners, Nanjing being a very industrialized city with a big university full of forigners. But even so, at every turistic place someone asks you if you'd mind taking a picture with them. It's really interesting...

ON SÓN ELS NENS?

On ha quedat allò de:

- Nens, al parc a jugar!

A Xina es porta més l'estil:

- Nens, anem al parc a jugar, voleu venir?

Aquests vídeos són imatges habituals als parcs d'aquí a Nanjing. Potser no aquest joc en concret, però sí el fet de fer exercici o algun tipus de joc. No té perquè ser aquesta versió futurista del "diabolo".

I aquí em declaro fan d'aquest punt en concret de l'estil de vida xinesa! Ai ves perquè la nostra gent gran s'ha d'estar a casa mirant "cine de barrio" un dissabte a la tarda? Tots al parc a fer exercici! Ment sana, cos sà! I que cosnti que això ho diu un servidor que l'únic que va fer aquella tarda va ser caminar fins al parc... Però és un bon exemple a prendre!

Potser esperaveu el típic vídeo de gent vestida de blanc fent TAI CHI... Doncs no, encara no els he trobat! Segur que hi són, però es fan pregar o aquell dia havien canviat de parc... :)

Here in China it's more like:

These videos ara just common situations you might find in Nanjing parks. Maybe not exactly this kind of game, but the fact of exercising.

And here I declare myself fan of this particular aspect of chinese daily life. Tell me, why should our old people stay home on a saturday afternnon just watching soap operas? Everyone to the park, now! Mens sana in corpore sano. And let's not forget that the one telling you this only made the effort to walk to the park that afternoon... But it'd be a good thing to do.

NOMÉS SÉ QUE NO SÉ RES

Diuen que a la vida s'apren a base "d'hòsties", i perdoneu l'expressió, però no hi ha veritat més gran que aquesta quan d'aprendre xinès es tracta! Al mateix temps, tampoc hi ha manera més "ràpida" i eficaç d'aprendre un idioma... Viure aquí no és tant sols un estimul visual cosntant de contrastos, sinó també un continuo de sensacions extremes: l'aufòria total de veure que ets capaç de comunicar-te en una llengua tan complicada, i la frustració de veure que no t'és possible articular el mot més senzill... La qüestió és agafar-s'ho amb filosofia, somriure, i llavors vius moments com aquests:

04/03/09: Tres companys de classe (la Patricia de Suïssa, la Cintia de Brasil, i en Jordi, un servidor) entren al restaurant més proper a les aules per fer un mos abans de les classes de la tarda. La carta és senzilla, tot de plats ben explicats en xinès, i en anglès, i al costat un número... Tot deliciós! Però, no donant-nos per satisfets, de postres, volíem maduixes! Vet aquí el moment de posaren pràctica el nostre extens vocabulari!

- Women yao CAO MEI ( Volem maduixes)

De seguida vam notar certa incertitut en la mirada del cambrer, però nosaltres vam insistir. Una mica sorprès, ens va demanar alguna cosa com: 1, 2, 3? I llavors vam ser nosaltres qui vam fer cara de sorpresos pensant:

- Preten que ens partim una maduixa entre tres?

Després de molt batallar vam aconseguir que ens mencionés la possibilitat de demanar un perol sencer! I satisfets "d'haver-nos entès" vam exclamar:

- HAO DE! (Ok, molt bé!)

Les maduixes van tardar ben bé mitja hora. Però no vam gosar qüestionar el cambrer, perquè per tots era sabut que les maduixes en aquest restaurant són fresquíssimes i de primera qualitat. Al cap de mitja hora, el cambrer va tornar... Amb unes maduixes un pèl curioses... Les que veieu a la foto! :)

Aparentment ell va entendre:

- CHAO MIAN. (fideus)

Després de molt riure per no plorar, vam buscar el foradet que havíem deixat per les maduixes i ens vam empassar els fideus juntament amb l'orgull. Vam arribar a la conclusió que ens havia entès però que realment volia vendre'ns els fideus perquè sabia que no li diríem que no, i sobretot perquè no tenia maduixes (això ens agradaria creure vaja). Però sigui com sigui 10 minuts més tard vam tornar a classe amb una lliçó d'humilitat i conscients que amb aquest idioma com amb tot, com més aprens, més t'adones que no saps res! Bon profit!

I JUST KNOW I KNOW NOTHING

It is said that in life we learn by making mistakes, and is a total truth when we talk about learning chinese! But that is the "fastest" and most efficient way to learn the language... Living here isn't just a constant visual stimulation of contrasts, it also means coming to lots of extrem sensations: from being extremely excited when you see you can communicate in such a difficult language, to the frustration of seeing you can't pronounce the easiest word... all you can do in that last case is to accept it with a smile and learn from situations like the following:

04/03/09 Three classmates (patricia from Switzerland, Cintia from Brasil, and myself) headed to the closest restaurant near the school to have something to eat before starting the afternoon lessons. The menu is simple: Everything explained both in chinese and english, and right next to it a number to order it. Everything was delicious. But, not feeling totally satisfied we decided we wanted strawberries! Time to put in practice our super Vocab!

- Women yao CAO MEI! (We want strawberries)

The waiter looked kind of puzzled, but we insisted... He continued asking us something like: 1, 2, 3. And the it was us who were astonished thinking he was telling us to share a strawberry! We kept insisting, till he mentioned the possibility to get a bowl! Then we all exclaimed in happyness:

- HAO DE (Ok, good!)

It took us half an hour to get the strawberries, but we didn't want to ask the waiter, because it was known by all that that restaurant had the best strawberries and the freshest ones, so who knows... The he came back with a kind of strawberries that looked different to us: the ones you see in the picture! :)

Apparently he undesrtood:

- CHAO MIAN (Fried Noodles)

After lots of laughs, denying tears... we looked for the hole we were keeping for the berries, and we swallowed the noodles along with our pride. We got to the conclusion he did understand us, but knowing we wouldn't refuse that dish he brought us noodles because he didn't have strawberries (well, that's what we want to believe :) ). In any case, 10 minutes later we went back to class humbly and with the lesson learnt: The more you learn, the less you know! Enjoy!

AL 14 SIUSPLAU

Abans d'entrar en matèria i descriure la Xina o Najing, potser seria interessant saber des d'on ho faig i què m'inspira! ;) De moment, el mal temps és la causa de la regularitat en l'actualització del Blog: plou, i molt...

Aquesta és la panoràmica des de la meva humida finestreta del pis 14 del Mandarin Garden Hotel, on resideixo, de moment... Treient el cap i mirant a la dreta, es veu el 2on gratacels més alt de la Xina i el 5è més alt del món, que teòricament acaba de construir-se aquest any... Però tornem a l'habitació... Potser em tenien mal acostumat, però a Pequín fins i tot me feien el llit i ni tan sols era un hotel... Estava convençut que avui, dilluns, després de classe, em trobaria l'habitació impecable. No ha estat així, me l'he trobat! Molt correcte... com la tinc jo sempre ;) Però amb el llit sense fer... Ahir ja vaig obtar per comprar-me una endròmina que, tot i no ser-ho, em servirà de "motxo" per apartar l'aigua del terra del bany, ja que sinó cada vegada que necessito entrar-hi després de dutxar-me m'he de mullar els peus... Aquí també començo a pensar que és tradició, si aparto la cortina em puc dutxar assegut a la tassa... Superat aquest petit contratemps de l'aigua, ara només em queda demanar a les noies que cada matí em trobo a la sala del costat dels ascensors en plan " atenció! ´som la brigada de la neteja" si realment ho fan o no. Més que res perquè, entre altres coses, avui se m'ha acabat el paper fi i en compraré... I no, aquest encara no és el capítol de la diarrea! Lo bo es fa esperar!

TO THE 14TH FLOOR PLEASE

Before starting describing Xina or Najing it would be nice to let you know where i do it from and what inspires me ;) Right now, bad weather is the cause of the regular updating of my blog: it's raining, a lot!

This is the panoramic view from my little humid window at the 14th floor of the Mandarin Garden Hotel, where I reside for the moment... Look out of the window to the right you can admire China's 2nd highest Skyscraper and the 5th of the world, still under construction, which should be finished this year... But let's go back to my room. Maybe I'm just a spoilt boy, but in Beijing they made my bed, and it wasn't even a hotel. I would have sworn that today, after class, I would find my room impecable, but no, i found it...! very correct, the way I always leave it ;) But my bed was still a mess. Yesterday i bought a weird tool that will help me get rid of the water on my bathroom floor after showering, otherwise everytime I need to use it after that, I get my feet wet! Here again, I think it's a tradition, if I remove the courtain I can shower sitting on the loo... Well, this little "problem" overcome, now I just need to ask a group of women I see next to the elevators every morning (like saying: carefull boy, we're the cleaning crew!) if the do clean. Don't get me wrong, I will do it myself, but I'll have to ask now, because I just ran out of toilette paper. And no, this is not the article where we talk about my diarreha problem! :)
