Deliciós i curiós!
Bon profit!
COOKING LESSONS
Let's go back to my love for food and cooking... One of the not many dark aspects of my stay in China is, without any doubt, the fact that I don't have a kitchen. But with Natalia we found the solution! Today we started chinese cooking lessons at Don Rafael. If it wasn't clear enough that they're great people, sunday mornings their cook is going to teach us how to prepare chinese food and afterwards we will enjoy it together!
Today we prepared:
Gong bao Ji din (one of my favourite): chicken with nuts (fast description); Toufu with pork; Fish soup; and garlic vegetables. Delicious and interesting!
Someday, when I have more time, I'll post a receit, since I'm sure that more than one would love to give it a try.
Enjoy!
BICICLETADA
La predicció del temps era boníssima (potser massa i tot. 30 i pico graus).
Mireu, mireu...
BIKES
The weather forecast was great (even too great... 30 something degrees). So we decided to ride our bikes to the mountain. And saturday at 10 in the morning, 9 of us started to move with our sanwiches, drinks, voley ball, cards and even a tent! It took us between 1,5 and 2 hours to reach oir destination, but it was worth it. We laughed and we exerceised a lot. :)
The truth is that the place wasn't really spectacular (though it was nice), although it was really nice to go away from the city... And the truth is that at 2pm they made us move from 1 corner of the park to the other, because they came up with the great idea of watering the trees... Anyhow, a sunny day, some sport, the best company and laughing therapy, made saturday a wonderfull day. Have a look...

Sense deixar Xina arribes a aquest trosset de Mallorca on t'envoltes de "català", espanyol, i on tot té gust d'oli d'oliva. Una delícia. I el tracte ja no és només molt agradable, sinó amistós.
Aquest divendres feia dos mesos de l'obertura del bar, i ho vam celebrar entre copes de vi i truita de patates. Esperem poder-hi celebrar molts més aniversaris!
Salut!
DON RAFAEL
So far I have been 2.5 months in Nanjing, and for 2 months we've been going to Don Rafael, a Spanish bar led by Max and his girlfriend Wu Ping, owned by Rafel, who we recently met (Rafel spends short periods of time in Nanjing each year as the owner of Bodegas Crestatx. He exports wine to China).
And I had to mention the bar in the Blog since, step by step it became our meeting point. Without leaving China you reach this little piece of Mallorca, where you're surrounded by catalan, spanish, and where everything tastes like olive oil. Wonderfull. And the treat you receive is no longer just very nice, it's now friendly.
Last friday the bar had been open for two months already, and we celebrated it among wine and tortilla. We hope we'll celebrate there many more annivresaries.
Gesundheit!

CUPPING
CUPPING
You know me... Wherever I go I try to get to know a bit of everything, including getting a chinese cold in this case... And in order to get ridd of it, Natalia is using, a part from acupuncture, "Cupping". I'll explain it to you in a simple way, the way I understood it. It consists in using these "cups" in order to suck the cold air of the cold out of the body. The air that gets to the organism and flows through the body channels to reach, for example, the lungs... I will let you know if it works or not. Right now I can only tell you that it is really relaxing, although I now have three circles on my back...

The usual joke within Taiji followers is that afetr 10 years, you can call yourself a good beginner... So, I will just not classify myself. Anyway, I can tell you that after two months taking lessons, there's been certain evolution and improvement. And if a month ago I joked about the fact that I was a potential killing machine, now, even if it's just accidentally, we could say that I already am! Here you have the progress, Tai Ji with swords!

I només hem fet classes d'espanyol.
SPANISH LESSOSN IN CHINESE
When willing to learn a language abroad, one of the best ways to practice what you have learnt during your morning lessons is to find a language partner. So you teach that person your mother tongue, and that person teaches you, in this case, chinese. We all know I would rather teach catalan, but I still have a long way to go before chinese understand the importance if our language ;)
So, today I started teaching spanish to my teacher's friend (in the picture the one in the back), and my class mate, korean to her sister. All the whole class was in spanish. And you'll say: what do you get from all this then? Well, she starts from the very beginning, so the whole lesson was in chinese! :)
We hope to see improvement soon, from her and from me!

CHINESE OPERA
In fact, it wasn't pure chinese classical opera. It was some kind of show combined with chinese opera. Very entertaining (to see what classical chinese opera is, watch "farewell my concubine"). I'm not going to make any positive or negative comment about it. It is just very different. Everything, the opera concept and even the way audience responds to it. Here you have a small fragment and you give me your opinion.
Enjoy it!
PESCA AMB CORMORANS
Fascinant!
CORMORANT FISHING
Fascinating! Those who know my passion for documentaries will understand why I post this article. I had always seen it in National Geographic docs and I always thought it was amazing. It is an ancient way of fishing with centuries of history. It has a cruel aspect I have to say, but it is very shocking. The technique is as follows:
The fisherman goes down the river on a small bamboo boat that he pushes with a long bamboo stick. He works with his Cormorants. Then, the man grabs one of the birds and put it in the water. Splshing the water with the bamboo, he indicates the animal it can start, and it immediately dives. In less than half a minute the bird is back at the surface with a fish in its throat. And there it's where I tell you it is a bit cruel. The cormorant has a thread around the lower part of its neck so he can't swallow the catch. Then the fisherman gets the bird out of the water and makes it vomit the fish. It really is spectacular, but it is even more fascinating to see how fast and with which eficiency these birds fish!
LA MEVA PROMESA
Sí, us ho he de confessar. Estic promès. Ho sé, us ho hauria d'haver dit abans, però tot ha passat molt ràpid...
MY FIANCÉE
Yes, I confess, I'm engaged. I should have told you before, I know... But it all happened so fast!
Monday afternoon, after visitng the rice terraces at Longsheng, we headed to a "Yao village". The visit consisted in a cruise along the river where we could see scenes of the daily life of the Yao people.
At one point, the bamboo boat you see on the picture approached ours. The two girls you see started to sing and we answered them singing too. And the, all of the sudden, the girl holding a ball threw it to me. The ball you also see on the other picture. No really knowing what was going on, I caught it. Aftewards I was told that there, when a girl likes a guy, she throws him the ball, and if he grabs it, that means he likes her back and afterwards they will probably get married...
So, well, now I am engaged to a Yao girl whose name I don't know... You, if you can't find a girlfriend here, it's only because you don't want to! ;)
WATCH OUT! A CHINESE DRIVING!
Firstly i should say I haven't seen many accidents so far (let's cross our fingers), but I can tell you now that our driving standars don't match theirs at all! Here you have a little example. In the pictures you will clearly see how much they respect the lines and driving ways. They just don't! here it is way more important to have a good claxon to tell the others you're coming!
Now I laugh, but I can assure you that the day we were driving to the river I wasn't almost breathing. Our driving was totally falling asleep. And seeing our guides didn't seem to give that much of importance I decided to go talk to him... He couldn't careless about what I was trying to say, so the conversation was soon over... Nevertheless, we were still in danger! So I decided to sit right behind him and start singing... Yeah, most of you will say that due to my irritating voice he couldn't sleep. I really believe he was so fascinated by my singing capacity that he woke up! Well, the point is we made to the river.
By the way, pay attention on how close the van passes.
LONGJI TITIAN, LONGSHEN
LONGJI TITIAN, LONGSHEN
Longshen is found among the mountains around de the Rongshui river Valley, 2 hours away from Guilin. Longshen is mainly inhabited by Zhuang people, who live in traditional wooden houses. They work mainly in the agriculture and now for turists.
The area is full of little villages to visit, and you can reach them by walking for hours across the mountains, but what really made this place famous is the rice terraces you will see in all the mountain.
Although at this time of the year the terraces didn't have much water and were no really green, it is worth it to see how the landscape has been modified and how they manage to use the ground to grow rice even when it looks impossible.

GUILIN
Famouse for its karstic massives, these hills surround the city and even fill it, giving it a beautiful touch of green. Anyway, these rock formations are more concentrated at the south of this former province-capital and along the river Li.
Guilin means "Osmanthus forest", and this kind of tree of singular perfume follow the river course through the city.
The truth is photography isn't capable of explaining what the human eye sees in reality. The rareness of these mountains surrounded by water and their round shapes so different to the ones we know, give this piece of earth a very special authenticity. It's a real pleasure for the eyes.
The city is one of the most beautiful I have visited so far. Because of its mountains, the river, its night life, the weather... To any occidental I think it's pure exotism. It's worth it a visit.

SANT JORDI A LA XINA
No, ni paradetes amb llibres, ni roses, ni autors firmant bestsellers... res d'això. És més, ha plogut una bona estona. I sabeu què? he tingut un dia fantàstic!
Gràcies a tots!
SANT JORDI (My name's day/ the international day of the book and rose) IN CHINA
No, there were no stands with books, no roses and no authors signing bestsellers... I'll tell you even more, it rained for quite a long time today. And you know what? I had a great day! Yes, I obviously thought a lot about my hometown, my people, our traditions and festivities. but all your messages, e-mails and calls made me feel even more special than if I had been home. Because when you're so far away, it means a lot that people think about you. So I decided to export one of our best celebrations to China and I bought some red roses to give away and at the same time explain the meaning of it. They either understood what I was trying to do, or they thought I am really desperate... :) And well, you can see reward: I had dinner with these two beautiful ladies and we had a great evening. I think i hadn't laughed like that in a very long time. I really really appreciate it. By the way, you all know Alicia now, my friend and Taiji colleague. The girl sitting next to me is Natalia who, today for the second time this week, tortured me with the acupuncture needles. ;)
The second picture... What can I say, I just loved it. I don't think they were expecting to appear in my Blog dressed like that, but it made my day, and I think it is a good representation of all the congratulations I received today which helped have a Sant Jordi as if I were home!
Thank you all!

ACUPUNTURA
I al final he decidit trucar la Natalia. Perquè la veritat, si ho fes ara us enganyaria. A veure què tal funciona!
Salut!
ACUPUNCTURE
I guess you all know my love for eating... And what happens when you spend two entire months in such a different country eating many different things without any kind of control? Your stomach and the whole digestive system complains. So, these lasts days I've been feeling a bit down, very tired... Nothing to worry about. But in the end I decided to call Natalia, a very nice colombian girl I met in a bar. Natalia is a doctor, and she came to China to learn about chinese medicine and among other things, acupuncture. Today, after work, she came to visit me. She checked my pressure, she listened to my chest, she palpated my belly, and she diagnosed it was really just a problem of my digestive system adjusting to all the changes. So it has a solution ;).
However, since she uses the two kinds of medecine, she offered me to help the healing process with some acupuncture. I obviously accepted!
She explained me the whole procedure and how it works, and it is really interesting and when you try it and feel it it seems very logic. But you'll have to wait for our next session (next thursday) so I can tell you about it. Because, honestly, if I tried now, I would probably lie to you. For the moment I leave you with a couple pictures of my pierced arms and legs. We'll see how that works!
Stay healthy!

NANJING MASSACRE
In 1937, Japan started the invasion of China, and that same year they entered Nanjing, back then the capital. Following the government's orders, most of the civilians stayed in the city, and once the government was already out of it, the japanese army entered the city and started un unprecedented massacre against civilians. Around 300.000 people died.
Today, taking advantage of a rainy day, and inspired by the burning building I saw in the morning... We vsited the Massacre Museum. I'm not going to tell all the atrocities I saw... It is not even allowed to take pictures there, but I think I just would have not done it anyway, for respect. What I do want to talk about though, is how it moved me. After seeing many awfull things (it's a very graphic museum. They show some of the multiple-body graves the way they found them), reading the stories of some of the survivours and reading about other so horrible things they couldn't even show, many questions arise. The first one: Why?!?!?!?!
And after thinking for a while about wars, victims and unfair events happening around the world, the fact of reading and seeing specific cases, I thought a bit further.
Till which point is our mind manipulative? Till which point would each one of us be capable of pulling the triger just because it's an order? Thousands of people died, but also thousands of soldiers assassined, slaughtered, raped those people without scruples. There's really so many bad people in this world? Or are we really so easily influenced? Are we so, so weak that even knowing what's wrong and what's right or just knowing that life is an inalienable right, even so we would be capable of killing almost as if it was part of a game or a job? I obviously want to think the answer is no, but still it's shockingly surprising, disturbing and terrifying to think about what was done and that has happened many times during the history of humanity. This sort of topic has been part of studies, movies (check DAS EXPERIMENT)... But in any case, when you see that no value was given to those people's lives, you feel small, very small... What do you think?
Nota informativa: l'edifici segueix desallotjat. Us mantindré informats.
Per cert, sí, ja ho sé... No sé perquè coi ho he gravat en vertical, ara no ho sé posar horitzontal! jejeje
A DARK DAY
Normally, either with smog or without, in a sunny or rainny day, staring out the window when I waske up feels good. Not today. In the video and picture you'll see what I found today: a burning skyscraper! The fire started in the lower floors and it fast grew up to the top ones. And by the line it followed and the speed it had, it must have taken the staircase way or somewhere that worked as a wind pipe. because it was fast and somehow structured. The fire is totally extinguished now. In fact it didn't last very long (as far as I could see). But watching it in live was brutal, and just thinking living there even more!
Note: It's 19.20 and the building's lights are all off. Noone there tonite. I'll keep you posted.
By the way. I know... why the hell did I recorded it like that if I can't put it straight... hahaha

GENT MACA
NICE PEOPLE
This weekend Cintia's cousin, who's living in Shanghai, came to Nanjing with a couple friends. And since the family was more or less united, her aunt invited us all for dinner in one of her restaurants. I think I can't remember the last time I saw such a big restaurant... But I felt it was a bit unpolite taking pictures of it. :) In any case, dinner was great and so was the company. It's nice to meet people like this!
