GUILIN

GUILIN
Famouse for its karstic massives, these hills surround the city and even fill it, giving it a beautiful touch of green. Anyway, these rock formations are more concentrated at the south of this former province-capital and along the river Li.
Guilin means "Osmanthus forest", and this kind of tree of singular perfume follow the river course through the city.
The truth is photography isn't capable of explaining what the human eye sees in reality. The rareness of these mountains surrounded by water and their round shapes so different to the ones we know, give this piece of earth a very special authenticity. It's a real pleasure for the eyes.
The city is one of the most beautiful I have visited so far. Because of its mountains, the river, its night life, the weather... To any occidental I think it's pure exotism. It's worth it a visit.

SANT JORDI A LA XINA
No, ni paradetes amb llibres, ni roses, ni autors firmant bestsellers... res d'això. És més, ha plogut una bona estona. I sabeu què? he tingut un dia fantàstic!
Gràcies a tots!

SANT JORDI (My name's day/ the international day of the book and rose) IN CHINA
No, there were no stands with books, no roses and no authors signing bestsellers... I'll tell you even more, it rained for quite a long time today. And you know what? I had a great day! Yes, I obviously thought a lot about my hometown, my people, our traditions and festivities. but all your messages, e-mails and calls made me feel even more special than if I had been home. Because when you're so far away, it means a lot that people think about you. So I decided to export one of our best celebrations to China and I bought some red roses to give away and at the same time explain the meaning of it. They either understood what I was trying to do, or they thought I am really desperate... :) And well, you can see reward: I had dinner with these two beautiful ladies and we had a great evening. I think i hadn't laughed like that in a very long time. I really really appreciate it. By the way, you all know Alicia now, my friend and Taiji colleague. The girl sitting next to me is Natalia who, today for the second time this week, tortured me with the acupuncture needles. ;)
The second picture... What can I say, I just loved it. I don't think they were expecting to appear in my Blog dressed like that, but it made my day, and I think it is a good representation of all the congratulations I received today which helped have a Sant Jordi as if I were home!
Thank you all!

ACUPUNTURA
I al final he decidit trucar la Natalia. Perquè la veritat, si ho fes ara us enganyaria. A veure què tal funciona!
Salut!

ACUPUNCTURE
I guess you all know my love for eating... And what happens when you spend two entire months in such a different country eating many different things without any kind of control? Your stomach and the whole digestive system complains. So, these lasts days I've been feeling a bit down, very tired... Nothing to worry about. But in the end I decided to call Natalia, a very nice colombian girl I met in a bar. Natalia is a doctor, and she came to China to learn about chinese medicine and among other things, acupuncture. Today, after work, she came to visit me. She checked my pressure, she listened to my chest, she palpated my belly, and she diagnosed it was really just a problem of my digestive system adjusting to all the changes. So it has a solution ;).
However, since she uses the two kinds of medecine, she offered me to help the healing process with some acupuncture. I obviously accepted!
She explained me the whole procedure and how it works, and it is really interesting and when you try it and feel it it seems very logic. But you'll have to wait for our next session (next thursday) so I can tell you about it. Because, honestly, if I tried now, I would probably lie to you. For the moment I leave you with a couple pictures of my pierced arms and legs. We'll see how that works!
Stay healthy!

NANJING MASSACRE
In 1937, Japan started the invasion of China, and that same year they entered Nanjing, back then the capital. Following the government's orders, most of the civilians stayed in the city, and once the government was already out of it, the japanese army entered the city and started un unprecedented massacre against civilians. Around 300.000 people died.
Today, taking advantage of a rainy day, and inspired by the burning building I saw in the morning... We vsited the Massacre Museum. I'm not going to tell all the atrocities I saw... It is not even allowed to take pictures there, but I think I just would have not done it anyway, for respect. What I do want to talk about though, is how it moved me. After seeing many awfull things (it's a very graphic museum. They show some of the multiple-body graves the way they found them), reading the stories of some of the survivours and reading about other so horrible things they couldn't even show, many questions arise. The first one: Why?!?!?!?!
And after thinking for a while about wars, victims and unfair events happening around the world, the fact of reading and seeing specific cases, I thought a bit further.
Till which point is our mind manipulative? Till which point would each one of us be capable of pulling the triger just because it's an order? Thousands of people died, but also thousands of soldiers assassined, slaughtered, raped those people without scruples. There's really so many bad people in this world? Or are we really so easily influenced? Are we so, so weak that even knowing what's wrong and what's right or just knowing that life is an inalienable right, even so we would be capable of killing almost as if it was part of a game or a job? I obviously want to think the answer is no, but still it's shockingly surprising, disturbing and terrifying to think about what was done and that has happened many times during the history of humanity. This sort of topic has been part of studies, movies (check DAS EXPERIMENT)... But in any case, when you see that no value was given to those people's lives, you feel small, very small... What do you think?

Nota informativa: l'edifici segueix desallotjat. Us mantindré informats.
Per cert, sí, ja ho sé... No sé perquè coi ho he gravat en vertical, ara no ho sé posar horitzontal! jejeje

A DARK DAY
Normally, either with smog or without, in a sunny or rainny day, staring out the window when I waske up feels good. Not today. In the video and picture you'll see what I found today: a burning skyscraper! The fire started in the lower floors and it fast grew up to the top ones. And by the line it followed and the speed it had, it must have taken the staircase way or somewhere that worked as a wind pipe. because it was fast and somehow structured. The fire is totally extinguished now. In fact it didn't last very long (as far as I could see). But watching it in live was brutal, and just thinking living there even more!
Note: It's 19.20 and the building's lights are all off. Noone there tonite. I'll keep you posted.
By the way. I know... why the hell did I recorded it like that if I can't put it straight... hahaha

GENT MACA

NICE PEOPLE
This weekend Cintia's cousin, who's living in Shanghai, came to Nanjing with a couple friends. And since the family was more or less united, her aunt invited us all for dinner in one of her restaurants. I think I can't remember the last time I saw such a big restaurant... But I felt it was a bit unpolite taking pictures of it. :) In any case, dinner was great and so was the company. It's nice to meet people like this!

MOMENT YUAN
... I després d'haver perdut ben bé mig quilet, espero que tots sabeu quin pas ve! I "voilà", problemes. I la llum era verda, vella... Però molt suau! Un vell bitllet d'un Yuan (uns 13 cèntims)!
La resta és història... I ja ho veieu.

YUAN EXPERIENCE
We all know that catalans are a pretty eschatological society. So in my Blog sooner or later there had to be an articl that dealed with this dimension of my personality in the chinese context. Some might say it takes out the intellectuality of my blog ;), but I really think the anegdote is funny and in this crisis environment it lowers the importance we often give to money.
We have to go back to April 4th, at 6.30 in the morning, ready to take the bus to HuangShan for 7 hours. yes, 7 hours! Aware of that and of the limitations of our bus (no toilette), I decided to put some pressure to my digestive system so it didn't give any unexpected surprises during the ride. And I have to say I was really amazed of how powerful my mind is to control the rest of the body in an imergency situation. In other words, I rushed out of the bus looking for a public wc. Also knowing the limitations of chinese public toilettes (acording to our standards: have no doors), I was fast and eficient. And since I know you all know what the procedure is, I'll skip it.
... A couple pound less later, I hope you all know what the following step is. Yeap, trouble! Another missing thing for the list: paper. But you will all say: Jordi, being so used to this sort of incovinience and used to travel as he is, he surely had that cleanex in his pocket... I looked and looked again, but nothing... The only thing I could find down there was my wallet. My catalanity was forcing me not to open it, but the evidence down the hole reapidly convinced me to! It was de beggining of our journey, so in my wallet there were only 100 yuan bills. And that here is a lot of money. No way! But then I saw the light! And the light was green, old, but very soft! Yes, I found an old on-yuan bill (13cents). The rest is history...
So you know. Lidfe in china is cheap, but even here I can't earn money. Here my moneys is used to buy things or to wipe up my...

DIUMENGE
Doncs arreglant bicicletes. I tot i que, no ens enganyem, el diumenge a tots ens agrada descansar, (i que no ens ho canviïn!) tot plegat desprenia una sensació de tranquilitat i benvolguda monotonia que semblava que no fes falta que fos diumenge ni que esperessin el dia de descans... Una sensació molt curiosa.

SUNDAY
On our way to the Art District of Nanjing, which by the way was closed, we voluntarily lost ourselves in one of the traditional neighbourhoods of the city. There life goes on on Sunday as if it was Monday. Stores open, the haidressers full and that man who normally fixes bikes, fixing bikes... And eventhough we all like resting on Sundays (and it better stay like this!), you could feel in the air some sort of peace and welcoming monotony as if Sunday didn't care and it wasn't necessary that it came... A very weird sensation.

EL RIU YANGTSÉ AL SEU PAS PER NANJING

YANGTSÉ RIVER IN NANJING

EXPLORANT NANJING

EXPLORING NANJING

After some weekend trips, it is time to rest and explore the city I live in... It usually happens that what is closer to us stays unknown, and it shouldn't be like that.

This morning we went to the Lion Rock Temple, where the we visited the Yuejiang Tower. Nowadays the Tower is used as a tourist attraction and as a "museum" about the Ming dinasty, one of the most fruitful dinasties in China's history. On top of that, once up there you can enjoy a nice view of the city's skyline and the Yangtse river.

LA "CULPABLE"! ;)

THE ONE TO "BLAME"! ;)

Wednesday evening when I came back to my dorm after eating some very tasty meat dumplings, I found a very nice surprise. Mei, my chinese teacher in Vic was in the city and came to my hotel to give me a surprise while I was away. I was very surprised anyway when I found the note she left me, and I called immediately so we could meet.

Next day we went for dinner to a restaurant where, with those who finally come to visit, we will go to, because I really liked it. It was avery nice and special evening, because if I am in Nanjing and not somewhere else, it is because of her advice, and I'm really happy with the choice. In other words, the evening was a mixture of gratitude from my part and pride from hers because she saw that I really enjoy my stay here...

Thanks Mei!

BAMBOO
Some weeks ago, in one of the pictures of Shanghai, you could see a bamboo scaffold and I briefly commented its strength. well, now we need to add to that quality, another one: flexibility (as you might appreciate in the picture).
And at the same time, I take the chance to say that even more impressive than bamboo's strength is these men's strength! Just with their shoulders and the help of bamboo, they carry up the mountain either those who don't want to walk or the food and drinks you can buy at the hostels once at the top. Here, the food does have a reason to be expensive...

BUSCA BUSCA!
A veure qui troba les escales! Si cliqueu la foto la podeu ampliar...

SEEK SEEK!
Let's see who finds the stairs first! You can enlarge the picture by double-clicking on it....

A BIT OF ROMANTICISM
Four weddings a funeral's soundtrack says it: Love is all around. And romanticism is also very present in China... And let me criticise it a bit before I tell you what this is about (although you can tell by the picture), but it sounds a bit like the mother's day or Valentine's Day... One of those celebrations many of us don't know why they're there but that always make us spend some money... Now, those who do celebrate this two can publicly kill me by leaving all kinds of messages on my blog. ;)
Anyway, it consists in climbing the mountain with your loved one and seal your love using one of the lockers you see (previously marked paying some yuans) so your love lasts forever... Don't get me wrong, tha truth is it has its charm... Even more, that why I took the picture. I think it's cute. Unfortunately, we were three that day, and in China they still don't have threesome lockers...

MUNTANYA AMUNT? ESCALES AMUNT!

UP THE MOUNTAIN? UPSTAIRS!
Yes, the yellow Mountain leaves you breathless. Because you not only walk it up, you walk all the way up by stone stairs. Yes, exactly as you read it. I don't really know if that was 20, 19 or 25 km, all I know is we used the stairs! I have to confess at the begining it was a bit deceiving... Again that has to do with a cultural difference and the concept I have of going to the mountain for a walk... Here, you had to follow the stairs and you could hardlyever get away from them. But after a while, you looked up, down, left and right... You saw all those neverending-stairs and the mountain suddenly gained a intriguing authenticity that made it very special and atractive. In anycase, that night I dreamt about stairs...

MUNTANYA GROGA (HUANG SHAN)

Ja em direu que us sembla!

YELLOW MOUNTAIN (HUANG SHAN)
This past weekend was the Yellow Mountain's turn. It's a chinese symbol and part the UNESCO World Heritage. Although an image is worth more than 1000 words (and you'll see many pictures in the upcoming video), the truth is photography can't really show the beauty and greatness of these mountains that, which their shapes, rocks and vegetation, leave without words...

And they also leave you out of breath... But this last detail along with some others I will try to explain them in several articles. Curiosities of a weekend I think they are worth a comment. You let me know what you think about it!

Bon profit!

DELICIOUS!

Yes, eating in China is really cheap. But we need to understand that, in general, the concept of restaurant is pretty different. When in other articles I used the word functionality I should have related it to restaurants. "Quality" and speed are the base of any chinese restaurant. If there no table cloth, glasses are paper cups or the waitress is on some sort of pijamas and sleepers... all these details are veeeery secondary.

And since nothing explains it better than an image, here you have an example of one of the restaurants we usually go to. In fact, we could say it is a garage turned into a restaurant, but their noodles are just incredible, and they cost 5 yuan (70 cents). On top of that, as you'll see in the vídeo, their home-made and fresh as can be! What else can you ask for?!

Enjoy!

TOTS SANTS

ALL SAINT'S DAY
Here the All Saint's Day is next monday 06/04. And, forgive me if I am a bit macabre, but irony brings out the humorous part of the topic... What you see in the picture made me think that, why should we go and clean the tombstones when it is pretty clear they won't use it anymore? here in China they went one step forward, even if it is not really a spiritual one. Here, those who do believe in another live, they believe even more that it's better than this one. And, since quality life is usually expensive, the best thing they can do is to send money. Therefore they invented this fake bills that they burn during the All Saint's Day along with other paper things they want to send away. Who would have thought that in the end, thos monopoly bills would have so much value... But the story doesn't end here. The whole ceremony has also some prayers and fireworks (to wake the dead up, since apparently you sleep alot up there) so the dead pray and take care of those who still live...
Now seriously, I thought this was one of those interesting cultural things worth a comment, and I have to say, it is a less sad and nicer way to interpret death, isn't it?

Punts a destacar:
Molt important a China!

ON TWO WHEELS
In one of her songs, Katie Melua says: there are 9 milion bicycles in Beijing. I don't really know how many you can find in Najing, but aprox... Lots! And after complaining about the smog, and also with the intention of avoiding traffic jam, I bought a bike!
Florian, who was going back to Germany today, sold it to me for about 20 euros.
A couple thinks to bring out:
- The bell! To warn people about your presence. Very important in China!
- The basket. Another point for the chinese. At home, a guy my age on a mountain bike with a basket in front, would generally be called a prick... But here in China, functinality comes first. So, why should you carry your bag on your back when you can just put it in the basket? they're absolutely right! We need to be a bit more practical. We shouldn't let trends and aesthetics come before logics, ergonomy and functionality. Hurray for the basket, and goodbye backpain!
